         "I am going on a course" says my daughter.  What sort of course"  I replied. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
           " A pilates retreat.  Why don't you come?"   "I have never done pilates before and certainly haven’t  worn lycra.  Where is it located?"  I asked.  In the Canary Islands she answered.  Well I have never been there either!  Three things to cross off my bucket list, I thought.
         &#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          The retreat was held at Playitas, Fuerteventura in a superb sporting resort next to the sea.  Jo and her pilates group from Chester made me feel very welcome.  An interesting group of ten, friendly, strong minded women all intent on keeping  themselves fit. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          The five day course Jo had put together were varied from watching the sunrise over the mountain and sea to watching the sun go down on the beach.  All very relaxing and meditative too.  Of course, other sessions were more demanding for some!!
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Jo managed the group's abilities very well considering the wide range in the ages. Increasing the intensity of each move to suit the ability of each of us.  Her relaxed style and sense of humour made the classes fun, interactive and informative. 
         &#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Opportunities at the retreat to participate in free sessions of other activities were also available to all and the Chester group challenged as many as they could fit in the day's schedule.

          The resort looked after their sporting enthusiasts very well with a range of excellent hotel accomodation, villas, apartments with all family needs. Also high on the list was the delicious food and varied menus prepared at the restaurants to feed those very hungry appetites.

         Aldi Pilates Equipment Review – Budget-Friendly or Just Cheap?

          If you've spotted Aldi’s fitness range in the middle aisle and wondered whether it's actually any good, you're not alone. As a personal trainer and Pilates instructor, I’m always curious (and sometimes sceptical) about low-cost workout gear – especially when it promises the same results as more expensive options.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          So, I picked up a selection of Pilates equipment from Aldi and gave it a proper test to see if it’s worth your time and money.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;

          Aldi’s range can vary depending on the week, but the kit I tested included:

          Resistance band
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

          Exercise mat
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

          Small hand weights

          Each item is designed for home use, and the prices are definitely appealing – most are under £10.
         &#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          First Impressions
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Straight out of the packaging, I was pleasantly surprised. The design is simple, the colours are neutral, and nothing feels overly gimmicky. That said, you can usually spot a difference in quality when comparing budget equipment to studio-grade gear – and Aldi’s kit is no exception.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          The mat, for example, is fine for low-impact movement but might not offer enough support if you’re on hard floors. The Pilates ring feels fairly sturdy, though not as durable as some professional ones I’ve used. Still, for beginners or occasional use, it’s not bad at all.

          Light and easy to store

          Great for beginners or casual home workouts

          Ideal if you’re just getting started and don’t want to spend a fortune

          Not suitable for more advanced training

          Resistance band was a bit too stretchy for my liking

          Final Verdict
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

          If you’re looking for budget Pilates equipment to use at home, Aldi’s kit is a decent place to start. It won’t replace studio-quality gear, but for the price, it does the job – especially if you're new to Pilates or just want a few extras to support your home workouts.

          Versatile and small, resistance bands add resistance to your workouts, targeting various muscle groups. Perfect for strength training and toning. These are great if you have limited space or want to take them away with you. They are sold in a variety of styles and strengths. If you are fortunate to have a Decathlon shop near you, they have a great selection which you can try before buying.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           4. Kettlebell(s):

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          These are one of my favourite bits of kit. There are lots of exercises which can be performed with them and they are a great thing to own as well as a pair of dumbbells. Avoid the plastic ones or the ones with square handles. Again, get in touch if you want links to kettlebells I recommend.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           5. Stability Ball:

    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Improve core strength and stability with a stability ball. Great for bodyweight exercises and challenging your balance. These take up a lot of space though so factor that in before buying.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           6. Foam Roller:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Aid muscle recovery and reduce muscle soreness with a foam roller. Incorporate it into your post-workout routine for a self-massage. There are conflicting opinions around the effectiveness of foam rollers. If you like them then use them, if not, don’t. They come in different textures and sizes and don’t need to be expensive. I like the long ones as they can be used in some Pilates exercises.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           7. Tennis Ball:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          This might seem like a strange one but tennis balls (or any other similar ball) are great for massage. I actually prefer them to foam rollers as you can target areas more specifically. Try rolling them under your foot to release any tension or lean against it pressed up against the wall to massage your back and shoulders. Ignore the strange looks you’ll get from your family!
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           8. Fitness Tracker:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          You’ll either love or hate fitness trackers. I personally find it motivating (occasionally irritating) to track my exercise and activity. The cost of trackers varies dramatically. If this is your first tracker, don’t go for the top end model. Try one of the cheaper ones or even a second hand one to see if you like it first.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           9. Workout Gear:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          I am a big believer that you are more likely to exercise in clothing you enjoy wearing. Working out in sweatpants and your partners old t-shirt is unlikely to make you feel good about yourself. Invest in something you feel comfortable and confident in. Those of you who know me know about my Vinted obsession. There are some great bargains to be had on fitness gear. Tell me what you get if you buy anything please!

          It can be incredibly hard to motivate yourself to workout at home. Make it easier for yourself by using online classes or workouts. There are options for every budget. Free workouts on YouTube, app subscriptions from celebrities, or online workouts from local instructors*. Choose what works for you.

         Should you be setting goals?

          There is so much talk at this time of year about setting goals and resolutions. Is it really the best way to go about things?
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Setting a goal can be a great idea. It gives you something to aim at and work towards. It can, however, feel like something that is a long way away which can cause you to loose motivation.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          I want to share with you what my clients and I are trying this year.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          We are deciding what our mid to long term goals are and then considering what habits we would need to put in place to help get us to those goals. The habits themselves then become the focus. Let me give you some examples.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          &amp;#55357;&amp;#56632; GOAL - to loose half a stone.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          &amp;#55357;&amp;#56633; HABIT - create a meal plan for the week ahead on Sunday evening.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          &amp;#55357;&amp;#56632; GOAL - have a tidier, less disorganised home.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          &amp;#55357;&amp;#56633; HABIT - spend 10 minutes each morning tidying up.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          &amp;#55357;&amp;#56632; GOAL - spend more time reading.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          &amp;#55357;&amp;#56633; HABIT - turn all electronic devices off by 9pm.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          You get the idea. By checking off your habits on a daily / weekly / monthly basis, you are getting closer to your goal without fixating on an end point. You are proving to yourself that you are the type of person who follows through with things and these habits will become ingrained. Chances are you can then build on them to make even more improvements to your life.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;

         New Year's Day is one of my favourite days of the year. I love the optimism of it and the chance for a fresh start. That is why I chose this date to launch my own business 5 years ago.

           Before Jo Bridge Fitness, I was teaching and personal training for other companies. I really enjoyed it and learnt so much from the people I worked for and with. Being my own boss now gives me the freedom to run my business in whatever way suits me and aligns with my values.

           1. Find an exercise partner or group.
          &#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          When exercising alone, there is only one person you have to convince to skip a session (we've all been there). By exercising with a partner or group, there’s some social pressure. You are less likely to want to let others down by backing out of pre made plans. Exercise partners can also provide social support, camaraderie and distraction from bad weather.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           2. Exercise during your lunch break.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          It can be really hard to head out when it’s dark in the morning and dark when you come home from work. The solution is to work out in the middle of the day, during the peak light hours.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          If the weather is tolerable, get outside for a walk during your lunch hour. This provides the added benefit of fresh air and a bit of nature. If you can't get outside, try an online workout.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           3. Focus on the mental health benefits.  
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          This time of year can feel very overwhelming. Trying to get work done before the holidays, buying Christmas presents, heading to Christmas parties, preparing for family visits. It is important to make some time for yourself.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          We all know the mental health benefits of exercise. It will help you feel less stressed, more relaxed, and more in control. These benefits are almost instant.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Feel good about doing something for yourself and your health and wellbeing.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           4. Wear the right kit.  
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          If you are going to be exercising outdoors, make sure you are wearing the right clothing. As you all know, Sweaty Betty is my go to brand (I am not sponsored by them but I am working on it!) They do a great range of thermal activewear which I live in over winter. Lots of other brands will offer similar things.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Make sure whatever you are wearing is warm (layer up so you can remove items as you get warmer), sweat wicking, and potentially waterproof.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           5. Work out online.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
            If you can't get outside for whatever reason, why not try online training? This could be a free YouTube workout or an online class with a local instructor.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Free classes are great for those with limited budgets. Signing up and paying for a class will make you much more likely to actually do it. Live online classes have the added benefit of the group camaraderie mentioned in tip 1.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;

          It is very important to surround yourself with people who inspire and support you. If you have dreams and ambitions, the people around you will either help make them a reality or hold you back from achieving them.
         &#xD;

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          These don’t necessarily need to be people you actually know. It could also include people you follow on social media or the authors you read. Chose wisely!

          If you are on a weight loss journey, surround yourself with people who encourage you. Having somebody who is unmotivated trying to derail you is not acceptable.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          If you want to set up your own business or side hustle, having lazy or un-driven people around you is going to sap your motivation.

         London Marathon Story

         This is my client Richard running Sunday's London Marathon. As you can probably see from the photo, he loved it.
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           Richard is a friend of mine and came to me specifically to help him with his strength training for his first marathon.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           He had done the Chester Metric Marathon before. I am sure he won't mind me saying that it didn't go as well as he had hoped. He decided to make sure that the Marathon went much better.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           With my guidance, Richard decided not to set a time goal for the Marathon. Instead the goal was to enjoy it and take in as much of the atmosphere as possible. This is exactly what he did and he managed to finish without feeling dreadful. (He did need help from his wife to get back to the hotel, but that is totally understandable!)
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           Rich did so well with his training because he enjoyed the process. He spent time researching training plans, nutrition, kit, etc. He also kept his training at a manageable level to work around family and work commitments.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           It would have been so easy for him to fall into the trap of beasting himself every session in order to chase after a specific time goal. He would not have enjoyed the training and probably wouldn't have enjoyed the marathon either.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           The moral of this story, and a good life lesson, is to enjoy the process rather than becoming fixated on the outcome.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           Congratulations to Richard and everyone who ran a marathon over the weekend. You are all now members of a very special group of nutters!

         Do you want to reduce your body fat and tone your body? If so, body conditioning is for you. This is a combination of strength and cardio exercises designed to raise your heart rate, burn fat, and build lean muscle.
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          This brand new, 10 day, online course starts Monday 15th November. There will be 15 minute daily workouts with both live and on demand options available. We will use weights, resistance bands, and body weight exercises to give you a full body workout from the comfort of your own home.

         Welcome to Jo Bridge Fitness

         Welcome to Jo Bridge Fitness and my brand new blog. For my first post I thought I would tell you a bit about myself and how I got into the fitness industry.
         &#xD;

          I was never particularly sporty at school. I wasn't one of the 'popular girls' and I always found PE really daunting. I was quite shy as a child so group activity with confident girls was not my idea of fun! I sometimes wish that had been different as I feel like I missed out. Who knows, I could have been lining up alongside Jess Ennis at the Olympics!
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          My fitness journey started on Boxing Day 2011. I was at my auntie's house with a glass of wine in my hand. She is a runner and I happened to have seen the Chester Marathon taking place a few months earlier. I casually asked her if 10 months was long enough to train for a marathon (I could just about run for 5k at the time). Her answer must have been yes because I entered the half marathon in May and the full marathon in October.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          At the time I was working in admin for a payroll company as I didn't know what I wanted to do for a career. I started training for the races and sharing my story with friends and family. I began getting messages telling me I had inspired them to get exercising. It was a lightbulb moment for me. I started my level 2 exercise to music and level 2 gym qualifications that year and later went on to do my personal training qualification.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          The races went well (the image above is me finishing the marathon) and I was bitten by the running bug. I have since done 2 more marathons (Chester again in 2014 and London in 2017), more half marathons than I can count, 10ks, 5ks and lots of Parkruns too. I am also a pacer for Chester Half Marathon which is one of the highlights of my year.
         &#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Since 2012 I have worked as a receptionist at Northgate Arena (which allowed me to start teaching classes there too), I worked with Claire Darlington at Delamere Outdoor Fitness for many years, Elysium gym for a few months, and Black Box before lockdown caused it to close. I now have my own gym (previously Dad's garage) for personal training and for teaching my online classes. Whilst lockdown was hard, thankfully it has been quite positive for my business. I am thankful to all of my clients, friends and family who have helped me keep my business going and thriving.
         &#xD;
